Relationship Between Architect And Client
My primary goal as architect is to make the client happy and satisfied. I want and seek to provide design solutions, whether the project is a new design or a renovation/addition, that address my client’s needs and wishes. This goal can only be achieved if the relationship between the architect and client is a partnership. It is essential, therefore, that we be willing and eager to talk with each other and share our views often and honestly.

For residential projects, architects increasingly are competing against builder/developer teams that I believe too often are more (and in some cases only) concerned about initial cost and how much profit can be made on each house. Architects are motivated by and apply their design talents to other, fundamentally more important goals. While financial goals and budgets of course are critical, we respond to clients’ desires for a well-designed, high-quality house that fits their lifestyle today and in the future. The value of our services can be computed over decades of comfortable, happy living in a home our clients love.

A good architect designs spaces and structures based on what clients want, not what we want them to have. That said, I of course leverage all my knowledge, skills and design talent to offer ideas and solutions that make a residential or commercial space interesting, distinctive, and of enduring value. At the end of the day, though, I am designing the client’s space, not mine. So, my challenge always is to offer a design solution that addresses—as creatively, harmoniously, beautifully and cost-effectively as possible—my client’s requirements, wishes, budget, and schedule.
